Convexity and compactness as models for the preferred intonation of chords

چکیده

It has been argued that convexity in the Euler lattice can be interpreted in terms of consonance (Honingh and Bod 2005). In this paper, a second hypothesis is presented that states that compactness in the Euler-lattice is an indication of consonance. It will be investigated if, and to which degree convexity and compactness are in agreement with the consonance of chords according to Euler’s measure of consonance. First, some diatonic chords are observed, after which the compactness, convexity and consonance according to Euler, is calculated for all possible sets (chords) of 2, 3 and 4 notes within a bounded note name space, such that the relation between these three measures

A geometrical approach to find the preferred intonation of chords

Previous work suggested that convexity in the Euler lattice can be interpreted in terms of consonance [1]. In this paper, a second hypothesis is presented that states that compactness in the Euler lattice is an indication of consonance. The convexity and compactness of chords is used as the basis of a model for the preferred intonation of chords in isolation (without a musical context). It is i...

Charting Enharmonicism on the Just Intonation Tonnetz: A Practical Approach to Neo-Riemannian Analysis

In this study, I propose a theory of voice leading for use with the tonal space of the justintonation Tonnetz. The theory is based largely upon established theories of diatonic voice leading and chromatic harmony, and also draws upon the principles of just intonation within the tonal system. The unambiguous expression of intervals as untempered ratios is dependent upon an established seven-step...

Compactness in the Euler-lattice: A parsimonious pitch spelling model

• AbstrAct Compactness and convexity have been shown to represent important principles in music, reflecting a notion of consonance in scales and chords, and have been successfully applied to well-known problems from music research. In this paper, the notion of compactness is applied to the problem of pitch spelling. Pitch spelling addresses the question of how to derive traditional score notati...

Calculating Cost Efficiency with Integer Data in the Absence of Convexity

One of the new topics in DEA is the data with integer values. In DEA classic models, it is assumed that input and output variables have real values. However, in many cases, some inputs or outputs can have integer values. Measuring cost efficiency is another method to evaluate the performance and assess the capabilities of a single decision-making unit for manufacturing current products at a min...

Convexity and the Well-formedness of Musical Objects

It is well known that subsets of the two-dimensional space ¢ 2 can represent prominent musical and music-theoretical objects such as scales, chords and chord vocabularies. It has been noted that the major and minor diatonic scale form convex subsets in this space. This triggers the question whether convexity is a more widespread concept in music. This article systematically investigates the con...
